Congratulations to Susin Nielsen!

Susin Nielsen has won many major awards in her career as a television writer, but she has just added another to her collection – this time for her book writing.

Susin has recently been announced as the winner of the Governor General’s Award for children’s literature, for her third young adult book, The Reluctant Journal of Henry K Larsen.  The book deals with serious subjects – bullying, the loss of a sibling and the disintegration of a family.  Despite the sombre themes, Susin brings her own compelling writing style to the story, and even manages to inject more than a little humour.  The result is a great book, which the GG jury described as “Thought-provoking and relevant, it addresses the effects of bullying in a realistic, compelling and compassionate way, exemplifying the adage ‘There are two sides to every story.  Henry’s journey is moving and weirdly, wildly funny.'”

A career as an award-winning novelist would be enough for some people, but Susin is as busy as ever in the television world.  As well as being in active development on several new projects, she has recently finished writing for Arctic Air (Omni/CBC) and is currently writing an episode for a new 1 hour drama to be shot here in Vancouver.
