SUMMER ’09 VANCOUVER TELEVISION REPORT

Greetings oh dear clients…
How about a little good news for a change?

Thought you would be interested in seeing updates about what this summer is going to look like in Vancouver.

Feature films are lovely, and they bring a very high visibility to the Vancouver market…but as Crawford Hawkins the DGC president says, “The features are the glamour, and the television is the lifeblood of our BC business”….and Ken Anderson the president of IATSE Local 891 states “Series work is the bread and butter for Vancouver.”

So here is the latest on ‘whazzup’ in Vancouver TV-Land

SERIES ALREADY SHOOTING

SANCTUARY - Sci-Fi network in season 2.  Dr Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her
team continue to track and find the monsters that move secretly among us. Casting: Stuart Aikins
STARGATE UNIVERSE - new series with a full season order on the Sci-Fi Channel.  The third show in the live action Stargate franchise and will start airing summer 2009. Casting: Clark & Page
PSYCH – Season 4, a novice sleuth tricks the police into thinking he has psychic powers, and now they’ve hired him to solve complicated crime cases. Casting: Clark & Page
THE TROOP – Nickelodeon series about a covert society group of kids who protect the world from supernatural creatures will begin filming season 1.  Casting: Maureen Webb
EUREKA – Sci-fi Network has green-lit Season 4 but it may start shooting as late as January!  A small town kept secret and guarded from the world is inhabited by only brilliant scientists who work on scientific government advances that usually go awry. Casting: Aikins & Cossey
DEFYING GRAVITY –just finishing first season and the series is looking for a US network home once filming has been completed.  It is to be aired in Canada and on BBC 2 in the UK. Series had VERY little guest cast requirements and may or may not get renewed for a second season… Eight astronauts living aboard an international spacecraft on a mission through the Solar System, as the world watches from thirteen billion kilometres away.  Staring Ron Livingston. COMING BACK SOON

SMALLVILLE – Moving into Season 9 starting July 1, Clark and the Justice League continue to fight the evil that is Lex Luthor on the CW channel. Casting: Mayrs & Brandstatter
SUPERNATURAL – Season 5 on the CW channel also starts to shoot July 1.  The two Winchester brothers will continue fighting supernatural evils. Casting Mayrs & Brandstatter

PILOTS PICKED UP AND COMING OUR WAY WITH SERIES ORDERS

CAPRICA – Sci-fi Channel goes back in time and space for this “Battlestar” prequel that starts to shoot July 15. Casting: Mayrs & Brandstatter
“V” – an ABC remake of the old science fiction series now staring Morris Chestnut… 12-year-old Eric Edwards was FAN #1! The show is about an alien invasion of Earth by a carnivorous race of reptilians. Casting: probably Clark & Page
HUMAN TARGET – a FOX action series based on the DC comic where private detective/bodyguard Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) saves his clients by impersonating them in situations that no normal amount of protection or security could keep them safe from. Casting: Sean Cossey
SHATTERED – gritty one-hour drama from Vancouver company Force Four. Kyle Loggins, once the best cop in the force and now a damaged recluse, solves crimes with the help of his unconventional forensic squad - who just happen to be facets of his multiple-personality-disorder. Casting: probably Lynne Carrow
HICCUPS – Nancy Robertson from Corner Gas stars as a children’s author with anger management issues.  She suffers from giant outbursts and fits of depression that are so sudden and unavoidable, they’re like hiccups!  She’s forced to team up with a life coach (husband and producer Brent Butt is joining the cast in this role) to learn some control. 13 episodes sold starting mid August. MOVING OUR WAY

FRINGE – an X-Files kinda series starring Vancouver’s Josh Jackson is moving here from New York to shoot Season 2 for FOX.  The team uses unorthodox “fringe” science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate “the Pattern”, a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences which are occurring all over the world.  Co-created by J.J. Abrams. Casting: Michelle Allen
ARE WE THERE YET – with Ice Cube will film 10 episodes with a quickie back-door pickup for as many as another 88 episodes! Casting: Sean Cossey
PREPPED – This Turner broadcasting pilot is confirmed to shoot here starting Aug 3. Casting and details TBA

NOT MOVING OUR WAY

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES – a youth vampire series adapted from books of the same name written by LJ Smith centering on a high school girl torn between two vampire brothers.  Pilot shot here, it did get picked up, but series is going in Atlanta
THE GOOD WIFE – Julianna Margulies starred in this Vancouver shot CBS pilot as a woman who has to go back to work as a lawyer after her successful husband is sent to jail for abuse of office –  series is going in New York.

POSSIBILITIES

REAPER – CW has cancelled the next season of Reaper, but ABC studio’s are in talks with CW affiliates to get it syndicated as a Sunday night program.  If continued, this quirky comedy about a slacker whose parents sell his soul to the devil as a child, will film Season 3. Actor’s options are up at the end of June so we’ll know soon!
